Requirements for the Major


Core Requirements

• Introduction to the Major: 201 (Reading for Performance)
• Interpretation and Performance: either 121 (Introduction to Acting), 221 (Scene Study), or 222 (Speeches and Monologues);
• Literature, History, Aesthetics: 215 (History of Drama and Theater I), 216 (History of Drama and Theater II) and 490 (Aesthetics and Criticism of the Theater);
• Administration and Design, either 230 (Principles of Design) or
241(Theater Administration);
• Production: either 131 (Basic Stagecraft) or 330R (Stagecraft Laboratory);
• Two semesters of 396 (Theater Majors Colloquium)--A one-credit, one-hour weekly course, currently held in the spring semester

Total 30 hours

Departmental Electives

Three other 200-level or higher courses (twelve credit hours) in the department
(or approved for the major) are required. Of these, one course (four hours)
must be in the concentration area of literature, history, and aesthetics. TS190 and 101 do not count toward major or minor.

Total 12 hours

Double Majors

Majors in Theater Studies often choose to double-major in other fields. Popular
double majors are English, Anthropology, Education and Languages. Students also have double majored in Pre-med and Business.
