Answers
- No audition is required for Theater Studies at Emory. Any student who has been accepted to Emory University can take classes in the Theater Studies Department.
- There are no specific scholarships granted to theater students. If you have questions regarding financial aid, please contact their office at (404) 727-6039 or check out their website at www.emory.edu/FINANCIAL_AID
- The number of productions done varies from year to year. Theater Emory, the resident professional company affiliated with the Theater Studies department, generally produces one large-scale show a semester, in addition to several smaller projects (e.g. workshops, staged readings, smaller productions) each semester. There are also three primary student theater groups (Ad Hoc, Starving Artists Productions, and AHANA Theater) that generally produce one show per semester. For more information on the student groups, please visit the Student Productions page on our Web site.
- No, you definitely do not have to be a major or minor in Theater Studies to be involved with Theater Emory or any of the student theater groups. Auditions for all productions are open to any student in the University.
- The Department of Theater Studies does not offer a major in musical theater, though we encourage interested students to double major in Theater Studies and Music. As these are both demanding majors, the sooner a student can speak with the Director of Undergraduate Studies from both departments, the better. While Theater Emory does not usually produce musicals, Ad Hoc (a student theater group) devotes itself solely to production of musical theater.
- There are several production-oriented classes--ranging from stagecraft to design--offered by the Department of Theater Studies, and there are multiple ways to get involved backstage with Theater Emory and the student groups. We're always looking for people to help with sets, lights, costumes, sound, and stage management!
- There are approximately fifty majors and thirty minors. However, there are certainly many other students who take classes and participate in productions who are not majors or minors.
- Yes, it's definitely possible to double major or major/minor with Theater Studies. Many of our students choose to pursue another field of interest, such as English, psychology, anthropology, music, or even biology.
