For nearly thirty years, Theater Emory has dedicated itself to the development of new work for the stage, based upon the belief that this work can enrich not only the scripts themselves but also those of us who choose to engage with them.
In trying to articulate the playmaking process, I am reminded of David Lynn’s (Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Chemistry and Biology at Emory University) definition of life as something having a container, with the ability to store and access energy, and to replicate. Likewise, to be a living play there must be a container of story and dramatic action; the dramatic elements must inspire and sustain creative energy; the germination process must result in a script that can be produced … and then reproduced.
We strive to create an environment, at Emory, where established and emerging writers choose to bring their growing plays for creative nurturance and support.
